Finding My Voice: Why I Created Nomelina
Welcome to Nomelina! If you’ve stumbled across this space, you might be wondering: Who is this, and why should I listen? I’m Karina, and while I’ve had the privilege of traveling the world—from solo adventures to luxurious stays—it’s important for me to share the real story behind this blog.

This isn’t a highlight reel of endless jet-setting or perfectly curated Instagram photos. In fact, as I write this, I’m sitting in my childhood bedroom at my parents’ house, feeling stuck. I recently returned to the U.S. after three incredible years abroad, where I established myself alone in foreign countries, teaching English and immersing myself in different cultures. Coming back home, I’m unemployed, navigating life with strict immigrant parents who were never thrilled about me traveling in the first place. It’s not glamorous, but it’s real—and that’s exactly why I started Nomelina.
Why Listen to Me?
What sets me apart is that I’m not here to sell you a picture-perfect idea of travel. I’m just like many of you—navigating the challenges of life, from struggling to find a job to learning how to live with family again after years of independence. I’m sharing first-hand stories, not just of travel, but of personal growth, professional setbacks, and academic achievements.
As a first-generation student from a low-income family, I’ve had to fight for every opportunity to explore the world. I know what it’s like to dream of traveling but feel like it’s completely out of reach. Scholarships helped me study abroad, and that transformative experience inspired me to live and work in France. It wasn’t easy—I faced resistance from my family, moments of self-doubt, and plenty of challenges navigating life in a foreign country. But those experiences have shaped who I am and the perspective I bring to this blog.
